In
addition to the duties physical therapists and athletic trainers
perform during weekly dance clinics, they also provide on-site therapy
services at NYUHJD's Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy
Center and numerous off-site satellite facilities. The Harkness
Center has a staff of physical therapists and athletic trainers
specially trained to care for the dance population. These clinicians
have had a minimum of two years of orthopaedic, sports medicine and
manual therapy training and have participated in in-service training
dealing with the occupational and psychological stressors of the dance
environment.
The physical therapists and athletic trainers are
responsible for the evaluation of the dancer's functional capacity
and the analysis of movement dysfunction associated with the dancer's
injury. The therapists also set goals with the dancer that will
lead to resolution of the dysfunction. They interpret the physician's
referrals and administer prescribed treatment. It is the therapist's
responsibility, together with the physician, to plan the dancer's
discharge from treatment so that the dancer is maximally able
to meet the functional demands of their occupation and demonstrate
knowledge and skills to prevent of re-injury.
The Harkness Center for Dance Injuries sees approximately
4,500 dance physical therapy visits per year. Patients are referred
from the dance clinic, orthopaedic private practices, as well as
outside referrals. Dancers are seen at the Sports Medicine Center
on NYUHJD's premises, or at one of the Harkness satellite offices.
